鉄道の運転分野については，英語で書籍が出版されており，その内容は欧米の技術の紹介となっている。その書籍を読めば，欧米の技術一般や現状を把握することができるものの，「なぜその技術が開発され，また培われてきたか」を理解するためには別途調査が必要であった。一方で，日本の鉄道運行では，欧米とは異なる様々な工夫が行われており，特筆すべき点として高密度輸送や地上インフラの高度な活用が挙げられる。これらに代表される日本の技術の海外展開や海外との交流等においては，英語による積極的な情報発信が求められているが，日本語と英語の間に必ずしも対応用語がなく，関係者が説明に苦慮しているのが実態である。特に運転分野の用語については，英語圏の国々においても用語に違いがあると指摘されている。
このような状況下で，日本において独自に発展してきた鉄道運転分野において，専門用語の国内外の違いを調査して，概念の相違ならびに基本的な用語について理解を深め，整理することの意義は大きい。
言葉や用語を対訳しただけでは情報発信や海外展開，交流で苦慮することが想定される。そこで，本委員会では，用語を適切に用いて意思疎通するためには，その用語の解釈や概念，加えて欧米の情勢や背景を調査することの方が重要との共通認識を得たことから，用語の調査をきっかけに，概念や背景を重点的に調査した。 |

Books have been published in English on the field of railway operation. Although it was possible to understand the technology in general and the current situation in Europe and the United States, a survey was needed to understand the background. The Japanese railway operation has characteristics of efficient management compared with Europe and the United States. Especially, high-capacity transportation system and effective use of ground infrastructure. For the publishing these Japanese technologies and exchanging with other countries, active messages and information is required in English. However, there are no counter-application words between Japanese and English, and the people who concerned in railway have a hard time explaining it. It has been noted that there are differences in terminology even in English-speaking countries, especially in terms of the operation field.
Therefore, it is important to investigate the national and international differences in terminology to understand and organize our concept of differences and terminology.
It is difficult to publish these Japanese technologies and expand overseas only by easiest answer of translation of words and terms. Therefore, in this committee, we decided to investigate the interpretation and concepts of the terms, as well as the situation and background in Europe and the United States. |
