Two optical waveguides were fabricated on the surface of a thin acupuncture needle to measure the concentration of biological substances in skin tissue using near-infrared light absorption. The optical waveguides have a core of SU-8 surrounded by aluminum that totally reflects light. The SU-8 was patterned on the surface of the acupuncture needle using the developed non-planar photo fabrication method and the aluminum was sputtered and patterned. A light transmitting/receiving windows were fabricated on the wall surface between the two optical waveguides and the lactate concentration was measured using the fabricated needle. |
