Since around the 1920s, Hidetsugu Yagi and some members of the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan engaged in a series of debates over the nature of scientific papers, “real research,” and even the “Society.” While most members believed that the IEEJ should broadly encompass those occupied in electrical government, industry, and education, Yagi considered it to be a “Society,” meaning a group of “gakuto”(academics) who were involved in engineering research. Furthermore, Yagi regarded engineering research as a kind of “science” and insisted that the journal of the “Society” should be a place to publish the results of such research. However, as the fact that the Electrical Society changed its name to the IEEJ indicated, Yagi’s ideas conflicted with those of most members, and as this paper will show, they were far removed from the social situations in 1920s Japan. |
